Pose for Success!

The Power pose – Amy Cuddy, a professor and researcher at Harvard Business School, studies how nonverbal behaviour and snap judgments affect people from the classroom to the boardroom.

Amy Cuddy’s research on body language reveals that we can change other people’s perceptions — and perhaps even our own body chemistry — simply by changing body positions.

During her research, Amy Cuddy noticed that even blind athletes raised their arms, and threw their head back when they win.

Using a few simple tweaks to body language, she discovered ways to help people become more powerful, one of these is the power pose.  Arms up in the air, look skywards and smile – hold for a short while.

One experiment used students who were preparing for an important interview, some did the power pose, and others did not.  They measured Cortisol and Testosterone in high power and low power pose students and the results were astounding.  100% of high power pose was offered the job.  100% of low did not.

Remember to smile as you do it.  When I was running a training course for MIND, one of the delegates had an interview coming up so we covered it in the group – it worked for him 🙂

The symptoms of anxiety and stress are the same – both make the heart race and beat faster but the difference is all in the mind. If you are about to do something you feel anxious about, such as an interview – tell yourself “I feel excited”, the feelings are the same as feeling nervous – state it clearly.

Fake it until you make it…
